CANCELED

As with many things in the past week, we are canceling the 2020 Big Sky GeoCon that was to be held in Missoula in April. You will receive a full refund for your registration fees and workshop fees. If you paid with credit card, the amount will be credited to your credit card. If you paid with a check, we will send your refund in a check format.

I would suggest that you cancel your hotel reservations. The Holiday Inn in Missoula has been very gracious in not charging MAGIP any penalties in light of the current situation.

We know that some of you have put work into presentations, and we want to acknowledge that and thank you. Hang on to it, we will look forward to seeing it at some point in the future.

As far as the workshops, we will send out the presenter’s contact information to those who had signed up for the workshops. The presenters may wish to do those in a different way, but that will be up to them.

Please feel free to contact myself, or any Board member if you do have questions.

I appreciate your patience as we work out any other details and questions that arise.

Be safe, be kind and stay well.

Evolution of Terrestrial LiDAR Data Collection and Processing for Tunnels

The US Forest Service (USFS) Northern Region manages 14 tunnels. These tunnels require consistent inspection to ensure safety to the traveling public. The Northern Region Geotechnical Engineering Staff decided to monitor changes using Terrestrial LiDAR. A Terrestrial LiDAR unit was purchased with a number of accessories, including targets. The Geotechnical Engineering staff went through a number of iterations on how to best utilize common points and features before actualizing a successfully registered point cloud. This presentation will detail the (often painful) evolution and simplification of the data collection the Geotechnical Engineering Staff went through to arrive at successful model registration.
